Hello to all Veronica fans and Stichting Norderney medewerkers
I first discovered Veronica by accident here in east Belfast one Spring evening in 1968 I think it was, at age 16. I took the Cossor transister up to the bedroom to tune to Caroline South - Caroline North nearer to us went off the air at 8 pm and we could only hear Caroline South at night - but this particular evening, and it was still daylight, this new sound came from what I thought was 199, very clear sound just at that moment, but in a language new to me, the programming was upbeat, and good sounding jingles declaring “Radio Veronica”. So began my listening to what would become my favourite pirate station, 192.
Why Veronica? Well, I found the total package exciting - the use of American and other jingles suitably edited with “Veronica” inserted, the latest British and American and Dutch singles (a wide range of records many not aired elsewhere), the Dutch language of the DJs fitted in very well, and the reclames, punchy with some great tunes - Lois, Berdi, and Centraal Werwarming, imbedded in my mind. Then there was Robbie Dale, and essential listening for me for the latest from the American Hot 100 - Klaas Vaak’s Radio Drama Monday to Thursday with clever use of BBC Radio One’s jingles suitably altered. The Veronica tecniek’s made the jingles sound even better than heard elsewhere.
Sadly for me the verhuising to 538 in October 1972 meant the end as I could not pick it up at all but the Stichting Norderney reliving the actual programmes is a little piece of heaven - and I can listen day and night!
Best wishes to all - David Wilson
